DEL TÁLERO DE PLATA BOHEMIO AL DÓLAR MUNDIAL (‘From the Bohemian Silver Thaler to the Worldwide Dollar’) is an exhibition held by the Museum of East Bohemia in conjunction with the University of Pardubice at a Mexican university – the Institute of Art at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo in the city of Real del Monte. The location of the exhibition is closely connected with the topic of the exhibition; the region was renowned for its silver mines, which in the Early Modern era made a huge impact on the global silver trade – and thus also on the development of thaler currencies.
The exhibition presents the emergence and development of thaler (tolar) currencies in 16th-century Europe – starting with the large silver coins minted in Jáchymov (Joachimsthal) in 1520, which were known as Joachimsthalers or just thalers (after the town’s German name) – a name which eventually came to refer to all coins of this general type. It has been designed as a travelling exhibition, and it consists of panels featuring photographs and galvanoplastic copies of rare historical coins – created by the museum’s restorer Michal Vojtěchovský using rare original coins from the museum’s collection as models. The exhibition presents the museum’s extensive numismatic collection, which currently numbers of 50 000 items.
